The Designer Mystery Block of the Month turns twenty in 2027 with twelve new blocks from Moda designers, stitched in Corey Yoder's Sunroom collection. Here's how to join.
There's something special about a quilting mystery that's kept people guessing for two decades. This year, the Designer Mystery Block of the Month turns twenty, and the celebration comes with twelve brand-new blocks from some of the most beloved Moda designers working today.
Each block is stitched in the Sunroom collection by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics, and the palette is lovely: radiant shades of strawberry, stone, and cloud white. It feels like a warm afternoon wrapped up in fabric. Whether this is your first mystery or your twentieth, there's a seat for everyone in the sunroom. So pull up a chair and let's walk through how it all comes together.
### How the Mystery Actually Works
Here's the fun part: you don't know what you're making until it arrives. Starting in June 2027, you'll get fabric and a pattern for one surprise block each month, running through May 2028. That's twelve blocks total, and each one comes from a different Moda Fabrics designer. Every block finishes at 12 inches square.
Add the coordinating finishing kit, and your completed quilt measures 62.5 inches by 76.5 inches. That's a generous throw size, perfect for a couch or a guest bed.
### What You Need to Join
Everything you need to uncover the mystery is just a reservation away:
- **Block of the Month club:** Monthly fabric and patterns for all twelve mystery blocks.
- **Finishing kit:** Coordinating setting, border, and binding fabrics, plus a finishing pattern and a keepsake box.
- **Backing set:** Coordinating Sunroom backing fabric and an exclusive quilt label.
You can grab the club on its own, but the finishing kit and backing set are what turn twelve separate blocks into one finished quilt. Worth thinking about early, since coordinating fabrics can sell out.
### Meet the 2027 Designers
Twelve Moda designers each contributed a block this year. Some names will feel like old friends, and a few might be new to you. Either way, each one brings a signature style to the block they created:
- Corey Yoder of Coriander Quilts
- Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs
- Keri Anguiano of Catching Stitches
- Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings
- Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts
- Heather Briggs of My Sew Quilty Life
- Stacy Iest Hsu
- Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique
- Jackie MacDonald of Sweetfire Road
- Robin Pickens
- Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life
- Barbara Groves of Me and My Sister Designs
That lineup is a big part of the draw. You're essentially getting a small lesson in twelve different design voices, all speaking the same color language through Sunroom.
> "There's a special kind of anticipation in waiting for each month's block to arrive, and after twenty years, it never gets old."
That quote sums up the appeal pretty well. The waiting is half the fun.
### Why the Slow Reveal Works
A block of the month asks you to trust the process. You commit before you know the full picture, and that's exactly what makes it satisfying. Each month becomes a small event, a package that shows up and gives you something to look forward to.
It's also a gentle pace. One block a month is manageable even when life gets busy, and by the end you've built something substantial without ever feeling rushed.
