The Sweet Woven Stars Sampler is a free 2027 scrap quilt pattern that turns your leftover fabric into crisp, precise stars in four sizes. Here's what you need to make one.
Those treasured scraps have been waiting for their moment to shine, and it's finally here. Since 2022, we've shared a scrappy pattern each year to help you turn leftover fabric into something you'll actually love. After a little breather in 2026, we're back with the Sweet Woven Stars Sampler — a free pattern available exclusively at Fat Quarter Shop.
The design uses four sizes of Woven Star Foundation Paper to create crisp, precise stars from small to large. Mix a medley of prints into each one, and no two blocks will look alike. Dig into your stash and get ready to see stars.
### What You'll Need to Get Started
This year's pattern is written for foundation paper piecing and finishes at a flashy 60.5" x 78.5". Here's your supply list:
- **Prints:** Use your scraps! This is the whole point of the project.
- **Background:** Go scrappy, or use 7.5 yards of one background fabric
- **Binding:** 3/4 yard of fabric
- **Backing:** 5 yards of fabric
- **Foundation paper:** One pad each of 4", 6", 8", and 12" Woven Star Foundation Paper — or grab the pad set that includes all four
- **Starter kit:** A foundation paper piecing kit with a seam roller, water-soluble glue pen, a 6" Add A Quarter Plus ruler, and size 90/14 machine needles
- **Optional:** A light pad for tracing, which makes the piecing easier on your eyes
That's a modest list for a quilt this size, and most of it is probably already in your sewing room.
### How Kimberly Is Making Her Version
Kimberly is keeping her stars sweet and bright with a palette of pink, green, blue, and yellow. She's skipping dark prints, browns, and grays altogether. To keep the quilt as scrappy as possible, she's using each print only once.
Here's the clever part: each star needs just eight prints. That means she can pull from lots of collections by different designers and manufacturers, and a bigger collection can stretch across a few blocks. Her favorite collections get the spotlight in the 12" blocks, while small-scale prints fit perfectly into the 4" blocks.
For the background, she chose the White on White X Print Yardage from Coriander Seeds by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics. She'll pick her binding and backing once the quilt top is nearly finished — a smart move that gives you room to change your mind.
### Watch a Star Come Together
Want to see a block take shape before you commit? In the livestream, Kimberly pieces an 8" block using Sunroom by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics, a collection shipping in April 2027. Along the way, she shows how to press the final seams open while still using the foundation paper, so your seams sit nicely.
If you'd rather press the traditional way, the Woven Star Foundation Paper how-to video walks you through it. Both methods work great, so try one of each and see which you like best.
