Your Leftover Scraps Could Become This Stunning 2027 Star Quilt

After a short break, the free Sweet Woven Stars Sampler pattern is here. See the full supply list, Kimberly's scrappy color strategy, and how to make each star block your own.

Those treasured scraps have been waiting for their moment to shine, and it's finally here. Since 2022, we've shared a scrappy pattern each year to help you turn leftover fabric into something you'll genuinely love. After a breather in 2026, we're back with something special: the Sweet Woven Stars Sampler, a free pattern available exclusively at Fat Quarter Shop. The design uses four sizes of Woven Star Foundation Paper to create crisp, precise stars from small to large. Mix a medley of prints into each one, and no two blocks will look alike. So dig into your stash and get ready to see stars. ### What You'll Need to Make Yours This year's pattern is written for foundation paper piecing and finishes at a generous 60.5" x 78.5". Here's your supply list: - **Prints:** Use your scraps - **Background:** Go scrappy, or use 7.5 yards of a single background fabric - **Binding:** 3/4 yard of fabric - **Backing:** 5 yards of fabric - **Foundation paper:** One pad each of the 4", 6", 8", and 12" Woven Star Foundation Paper, or a full pad set that includes all four sizes - **Foundation paper piecing starter kit:** Includes a Quick Press seam roller, a Sewline Blue water-soluble glue pen, an Add A Quarter 6" Plus Pink Ruler, and Schmetz Universal Size 90/14 machine needles (5 count) - **Optional:** A CutterPillar Glow Premium II ### How Kimberly Is Building Her Scrap Quilt Kimberly is keeping her stars sweet and bright with a palette of pink, green, blue, and yellow. She's skipping dark prints, browns, and grays altogether. To keep the quilt as scrappy as possible, she's using each print only once. Each star needs just eight prints, so she can pull from lots of collections by different designers and manufacturers. A bigger collection can stretch across a few blocks. Her favorite collections get the spotlight in the 12" blocks, while small-scale prints fit perfectly into the 4" blocks. For the background, Kimberly chose the White on White X Print Yardage from Coriander Seeds by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics. She'll pick her binding and backing once the quilt top is nearly finished, which is a smart way to let the finished stars guide those final decisions. ### Watch a Star Come Together Want to see a star take shape? In the livestream, Kimberly pieces an 8" block using Sunroom by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics, a collection shipping in April 2027. Along the way, she shows how to press the final seams open while still using the foundation paper, so your seams sit nicely. If you'd rather press the traditional way, a separate how-to video walks you through that method. Both approaches work great, so try one of each and see which you prefer. > "Each star needs just eight prints, so she can pull from lots of collections by different designers and manufacturers." ### Share Your Stars We'd love to see your scraps in action.
