This Flying Geese Block Will Ground Your Next Quilt Project

Week 22 of the Sewcialites 3 Quilt Along brings the Down To Earth block by Wendy Sheppard. This intermediate flying geese design is perfect for quilters ready to sharpen their piecing skills.

Welcome back to week 22 of the Sewcialites 3 Quilt Along! We're celebrating our amazing quilting community with another brand-new block pattern. This week, we're thrilled to introduce the grounded Down To Earth Block by the incredibly talented Wendy Sheppard. ### Meet Wendy Sheppard Wendy Sheppard is a renowned quilt pattern designer known for her fresh, modern take on traditional designs. For this project, she created an intermediate-level block that relies on flying geese and plenty of precise piecing. If you're ready to sharpen your skills, this block is a perfect challenge. ### Live Tutorial and Community Want to sew along with us? Join Kimberly for a live sewing tutorial of the Down To Earth Block on Friday, July 24th, at 9 AM Central Time. You can catch the Behind The Seams Livestream on the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube Channel. It's a great chance to ask questions and connect with other quilters. Wendy is making her Sewcialites 3 Quilt with scrappy red, white, and blue fabrics from her stash. That scrappy approach gives the quilt a charming, personal feel. ### Block Pattern and Recommended Supplies To get started, download the free PDF pattern for Sewcialites 3 Block 22 – Down To Earth by Wendy Sheppard. You'll also want the Sewcialites 3 Information Packet for full details on the quilt-along. For the flying geese units, we recommend using foundation paper. Here are the sizes you'll need: - 1 inch x 2 inches Flying Geese Quilt Block Foundation Paper - 1.5 inches x 3 inches Flying Geese Quilt Block Foundation Paper You can find patterns for Blocks 1 through 21 on the Sewcialites 3 Quilt Along Supply Page. ### Seeing the Block in Different Sizes One of the best parts of this block is how versatile it is. Kimberly stitched the 6-inch block using Lyda Rose by Bunny Hill Designs for Moda Fabrics. Gina Tell made the 3-inch block in Wild Honey by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. Pat Sloan pieced her 9-inch block with Rosie by Fig Tree Quilts for Moda Fabrics. Our staff also joined in! Three of our quilty staffers are making 9-inch blocks using: - Blueprint by Camille Roskelley for Moda Fabrics - American Gatherings III by Primitive Gatherings for Moda Fabrics - In the Garden by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics Each fabric collection brings a completely different personality to the same block. It's a great reminder that choosing your fabrics is half the fun. ### Join the Conversation Ready to chat? Meet your fellow Sewcialites in the Sewcialites Lounge on Facebook.
