This Quilt Block Design Hides a Clever Technique You'll Love

Discover the Down To Earth quilt block by Wendy Sheppard, an intermediate design with flying geese and clever piecing. See three size options and join the Sewcialites 3 community.

Welcome back to week 22 of the Sewcialites 3 Quilt Along. We're celebrating our amazing quilting community, and this week, we're thrilled to introduce the Down To Earth Block by Wendy Sheppard. It's a grounded design that packs a punch with flying geese and precise piecing. ### A Designer You'll Want to Know Wendy Sheppard is a quilt pattern designer whose work always feels fresh and intentional. This intermediate-level block is no exception. It's built with flying geese units and plenty of piecing, so it's perfect if you're ready to stretch your skills a little. You can join Kimberly for a live sewing tutorial on Friday, July 24th, at 9 AM CT in the Behind The Seams Livestream on the Fat Quarter Shop YouTube Channel. ### What Makes This Block Special Wendy is sewing her Sewcialites 3 Quilt with scrappy red, white, and blue scraps from her stash. That's a great reminder: you don't need a fancy fabric collection to make something beautiful. The block itself is grounded, but the color play can take it anywhere. Here's what you'll need to get started: - Sewcialites 3 Block 22 - Down To Earth by Wendy Sheppard Free PDF Pattern - Sewcialites 3 Information Packet Free PDF - 1-inch x 2-inch Flying Geese Quilt Block Foundation Paper - 1.5-inch x 3-inch Flying Geese Quilt Block Foundation Paper - Visit the Sewcialites 3 Quilt Along Supply Page for patterns for Blocks 1-21 ### Three Sizes, Three Looks One of the coolest things about this block is how it transforms at different sizes. Kimberly sewed the 6-inch block using Lyda Rose by Bunny Hill Designs for Moda Fabrics. Gina Tell made the 3-inch block in Wild Honey by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. And Pat Sloan pieced her 9-inch block with Rosie by Fig Tree Quilts for Moda Fabrics. Each version has its own personality. Three of our Quilty Staffers are also joining in, making the 9-inch blocks using Blueprint by Camille Roskelley for Moda Fabrics, American Gatherings III by Primitive Gatherings for Moda Fabrics, and In the Garden by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics. It's proof that one pattern can look completely different depending on your fabric choices. ### Join the Conversation Ready to chat? Meet us in the Sewcialites Lounge on Facebook.
